Angel Kisses

"Mom, are God and Jesus the only ones in Heaven?"

This was asked of me as we were driving down the road the other day. Oh dear. Where is she headed with this one?

"Well," (explaining this to a 5 year old is not that easy!). "Jesus is in Heaven with angels and other people that have died that believe in Jesus - like Pepaw and Mammaw" (my grandfather and her name-sake and my great grandmother - both of whom we talk about often. )

Whew I made it out of that one with not many complications!

But wait... a little further down the road...

"Mom, if angels are in Heaven - do you think they'll give me more angel kisses when I get there? I just don't have very many and you have alot!"

I had to do all I could to maintain a straight face and understand her seriousness in these questions! The angel kisses she is referring to are my freckles! Oh, if only I had that child-like faith and truly felt they were kisses from angels! I did tell her that she may magically receive some special angel kisses as she grows (and plays outside)... afterall - she is my daughter - and I didn't ALWAYS have this many "angel kisses!"

Raindrops on Roses...

...and whiskers on kittens, bright colored petals, and warm woolen mittens... These are a few of Maria Von-Trap's favorite things.

However, around the Post house, it sounds more like this: Golf carts, Astros, Bulldozers, and School Supplies...

Well, it doesn't really rhyme -but that is what we've been up to. I'll start with the golf cart. We are proud (depending who you're talking to) new owners of an '87 golf cart. Corbett stumbled upon it, got a great deal, and just couldn't pass it up. A boy's gotta have his toys no matter how old he is, right? Maggie has gotten a ride on it, but the boys don't know about it yet. They are spending time with Pops and Bibs.

Next, Astros. We took Maggie and Chap to the Astros game on Friday night. They had a good time, and it was a long wait - but they got to enjoy Friday night fireworks.

Bulldozers... I'll just let you put words to this one...

And school supplies? Well, it has been done. Maggie and I had a Mommy/Daughter day and we spent it school shopping. I wasn't sure when I would have another opportunity without "the brothers." KINDERGARTEN? My baby girl is going to be in Kindergarten!! She is a little apprehensive - but mainly because it is something new. We have Kindergarten Orientation the first week in August, so hopefully a few butterflies in the tummy will dissolve (if not for her - then for me :o). I do think she is excited with all of her new things, though... (uniforms... well, that is a different story! - I'm still working on her with that. She is a bit bummed that her sundresses and "soft" clothes won't work.)

These are a few of our favorite things....

Ironing out a few kinks

Yesterday evening, for the first time in a while - our part of the world saw lightening. It was at a distance and we couldn't hear the thunder. So, as we were driving and saw it at the horizon... Maggie said... "Hey, I saw a crack in the sky!"

Then, tonight, while driving home from Devers - we began getting sprinkles on our windshield (another thing our part of the world hasn't seen in a while). Whit said, "ANTS!!!! ON OUR WINDOW!!!"

(Those stories were free)

Now... for ironing out the kinks...

Whit had his PT evaluation last week. He showed gross motor skills ranging from 18 months to 22 months of age. (He is 32 months old). While that is very close to "normal" for the locomotion and coordination skills she assessed, the therapist did see a definite neurological deficit with control and gait. Therefore, she is recommending once/week PT for him - just as the neurocognitive dr. had prescribed - to iron out those minor kinks. We have the speech and occupational therapies coming up in a few weeks.

Speaking of the neurocognitive doctor, I received a phone call from his nurse on Friday afternoon. While at the development appointment a few weeks ago, the neurologist checked Whit's iron levels. As it turns out, Whit shows a significant iron deficiency. We are on a "trial" round of iron supplements to see if the problem is nutritional or metabolic. We are a little anxious, because we don't feel it is due to nutritional issues. At the end of 3 months of being on the iron supplement, they will re-test his iron levels and we will go from there. He was discharged from the NICU on this same supplement, and it made him sick. We have survived two nights of it so far (even though he does NOT like it). Hopefully he'll continue taking it okay, though, and it will not make him sick. We are also praying that if it is a metabolic issue, it will be an easy, and not serious fix.

When I was talking to my mom tonight, I said - "Hopefully we'll get everything ironed out without a major issue." I didn't even catch my own "pun". She did, though!

Family Vacation

We just returned from our vacation to San Antonio. We visited Sea World, the San Antonio Zoo, took a train ride, A brief walk-thru of the Alam0 (all that two 2-year olds, a 5 year old, and myself could handle) - Corbett could've stayed there all day - the Riverwalk, a boat ride along the river, and visiting with some great friends from Austin on the last day. A while back, we got into the habit of asking Maggie her favorite parts of different activities... so we included the boys this time.

Whit... what was your favorite part? "My box" (Explanation... I had gotten each of them a little tin lunch box filled with a few toys according to their personalities and snacks - to entertain themselves on the road... it actually worked, too! It kept them occupied in the hotel, too).

Chap... what was your favorite part? "I saw a Zebra and Elephant!" (He is our zoologist! (or other veterinarian) He loves animals and was quite entertained at Sea World with the shows and at the zoo.)

Maggie... what was your favorite part? "I just liked it ALL!" but, what was the best part? "Swimming at Sea World and Shamu... and my favoritest part was seeing Matt, Ellen, and Katy Ann (our friends).

All in all our trip was a success, and we all had a great time! And, of course... I took a few pics!

Full Potential, Here We Come...

Whit was seen at Texas Children's Developmental Center today.  This was an anxiously and long-awaited appointment.  The appointment was very positive, and he tolerated it great!  By the end, he was hungry and tired - but he was a trooper!  My mom and dad have kept Maggie and Chap for us, and we have been able to enjoy some much needed quality time with Whit.  He ran errands with me last night, he helped me hang curtains, we went to his Dr. appointment today, took him for a train ride at Hermann Park, and we went to Bass Pro Shops tonight to eat with Amy and "Baby George".  I think he's enjoyed being an "only child" for a few days.

He was assessed in several areas, based on his age of being 30.5 months old.  His overall non-verbal skills were equivalent to 33 months of age.  However, his Fine Motor, Gross Motor, and Expressive Language (which the doctor feels relate to motor issues, too) are equivalent to 27 months of age.  When he was assessed originally by the same doctor at 8 months old, he had the same areas of concern in those three disciplines - and was delayed by 3 months at that time, too.  So, while these are mild delays - the three together compared to his nonverbal skills cause red flags.  Those three motoric brain delays clumped together are sometimes associated with Cerebral Palsy.  He said if it is CP, then it is in its mildest form - but we are not going to give him that big of a label at this point.  We will return for another evaluation in a year, and if he hasn't made any gains to close the 3 month delay gap - then we'll proceed with an MRI and other diagnostic testing.

In the meantime, he prescribed therapeutic services for all areas... Occupational Therapy (Fine Motor/Oral Motor); Physical Therapy (Gross Motor); Speech Therapy (Language/Oral Motor)... all once a week.  He also referred him for a therapeutic rehabilitation evaluation for assessment to see if any rehabilitation methods are needed - such as splints for his ankles and legs.

Whit has hypertonia - which is very high muscle tone.  It is especially high in his ankles and legs.  Therefore, he was also diagnosed with an abnormal gait.  Along with physical therapy, and the rehabilitation evaluation, he recommended high-top shoes to support his ankles and leg muscles.  He also ordered some blood work to check his muscle enzymes to make sure there is no indication of muscular anomalies that might cause the hypertonia (although he didn't think there would be).

The therapy is "medically necessary" for Whit in order to improve the following deficits:
Gross Motor Coordination
Fine Motor Coordination
Gait Training
Developmental stimulation
Range of motion and strengthening
Vestibular/sensory processing
Improve articulation
Expressive Language
Auditory processing/receptive language
Fluency
Voice Quality
Receptive Language
Pragmatic Language skills

While that seems like a long list, the doctor was very pleased that he is progressing.  He is just concerned about the gap and how it hasn't closed in a bit more.  He said that we could just sit back and accept that he is progressing, but he would like to be pro-active in treatment and therapy.  He did say that to the naked eye (such as church, daycare, and other places in public), he appears to be on level and shows little evidence of any developmental delays.  A very true and real observation!!

Our concerns and predictions were confirmed and affirmed, medically, today.  Now, we will be able to get him the therapeutic help he needs to ensure he reaches his full developmental potential.
